Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Yak Tee is a small and under-enrolled school (SKM) located in a very small town called Oya in Dalat, Sarawak. The school only has 95 students and 13 teachers to date. Being remotely located, the school had no access to 4G internet connection and teachers found it very difficult to do much with Frog except for building Sites.
In 2017, Frog Admins Cikgu Cikgu Vong and Cikgu Wong worked together with Headmaster Wong Lee Chin to come up with initiatives to increase the Frog usage in school. When both teachers were transferred in 2018, Cikgu Tan Ching Ching took over as Frog Admin and continued to implement the strategies they have already built. In the same year, the school received 4G internet connection and YES Altitude smartphones that contributed to helping teachers and students connect better and faster to Frog. Since then, the school has been actively and consistently using Frog.
Frog is making a difference in Teaching & Learning
In 2017, the Frog Admin created a timetable for teachers and students to take turns during class to use Frog. Teachers guided students on how to use Frog, and even with the connection being unstable at the time, students were very excited to be able to use a laptop and learn with Frog. Teachers also saw a change in students as they began to participate more actively in class by asking and answering questions during lessons.
Through learning with Frog, students gained exposure to technology and developed ICT skills. As they continued to use more of Frog in teaching and learning, students improve more in their ICT skills and become more confident in handling devices. Students very much enjoy using FrogPlay and throughout the Frog Championships, they were very motivated to score high points by attentively completing quizzes. This has helped them improve in their subjects.
A tool for teachers to teach better
Although the internet connection was slow and frustrating, teachers still went on to build Sites for their lessons. They find Frog to be very convenient as they can input various types of learning materials and incorporate visuals and videos for better understanding. As Chinese content was still limited at the time, teachers created customised Chinese Quizzes that would help students learn better. Not just that, teachers also utilised Quizzes used in Sekolah Kebangsaan to help students improve in English and Bahasa Melayu.
