SMK AGAMA, SARAWAK

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama is a hostel religious school in Miri, Sarawak, with over 700 students and 70 teachers. In 2017, the school’s internet service got cut and at the same time, the computer lab was forced to close down because of a broken ceiling. Due to this, all IT usage only occured in the library. With limited devices available in the library, this caused the school to have difficulty in utilising Frog consistently and actively.

A solution was given in 2017 when the school received Frog Appliance. As the school did not have internet connectivity, the Frog Appliance enabled the school to utilise the VLE platform offline. Cikgu Engku Mohd Shahrul Akimi bin Engku Ismail took over as the new Frog Admin in the middle of the year and was actively attending Hubs workshops to bring back knowledge and best practices to optimise the use of Frog in school.

When the school was provided 4G internet connectivity in 2018, he started doing in-house training sessions for teachers on how to assign Assignments and create Quizzes for students. Besides that, he became more intentional in getting students to start using Frog by distributing their IDs and passwords. He continued driving the Take Home Exercise (THE) programme implemented by the previous Frog Admin in 2016 for Form 3 and Form 5 students to continue using Frog after school as extra exercise and revision.

Frog is making a difference in Teaching & Learning

Student progress

With 95% of the students living in hostels and with limited access to the internet, Frog has given them exposure to the digital world. Not having much experience with technological tools previously, students are now more IT-savvy and know how to utilise the internet to learn better.

Frog is making a difference in Administration

Decrease workload

The school uses Frog for administrative work by implementing e-RPH and QR codes via the VLE. Teachers’ daily lesson plans are submitted through e-RPH, while recording attendance and booking for meeting rooms and computer lab are done through QR codes. Teachers are fully utilising the YES Altitude phones to do so, and this has enabled the school to significantly save cost on paper and printing. Senior teachers also find it easier to monitor and track teachers’ work and progress through Frog.

Frog is making a difference in Community Engagement

Teachers come together as a community to support and inspire one another in 21st Century teaching and learning

The school invited the Headmistress of SMK Paya Rumput from Melaka to share on the school’s best practices with Frog. This was done teachers received the YES Altitude phone. SMK Agama was highly motivated by what was shared by the Headmistress and began actively engaging in Hubs workshops to learn more about Frog and begin implementing that knowledge into their own school.

The school has successfully implemented Frog and has received a number of requests by other schools to visit and learn from SMK Agama. Not only that, Cikgu Shahrul, the Frog Admin, often receives inquiries through group chats on how to utilise Frog optimally in teaching and learning, as well as administration.
