Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan St John is located in Tuaran, Sabah with more than 700 students and 46 teachers. The school became active with Frog in 2014 when they received Chromebooks. The utilisation of the VLE platform was highly encouraged by previous Headmaster Dr Ngiam Eng Hong who placed emphasis on the integration of technology in education. Through the support of PKG in providing training and workshops, Frog Admins Mr Johnny Paul and Mr Elbert Nasly began sharing what they learned about Frog with the rest of the teachers in school.
Since 2016, the school scheduled each class to use Frog in the computer lab on a weekly, which has led to consistent utilisation by teachers and students. Teachers also began customising their personal dashboard and soon, subject panels were placing vital importance in using Frog for all subjects. The school’s successful implementation of Frog across the school was recognized by the district education office and was rewarded for the best practices in 21st Century education in 2016 and 2017.
Frog is making a difference in Teaching & Learning
Mr Elbert Nasly shared that since teachers began using Frog to teach, students have become more interested in learning and are more engaged during lessons. Students find it more exciting to learn with technology compared to the traditional “chalk and talk” method.
Mr Paul Johnny shared that students have become more independent in their learning journey since they started using Frog. They are taking initiative to search the internet for extra learning materials that could help them answer assigned FrogPlay quizzes better. FrogPlay Quizzes and Boost Sites contributed greatly to students’ improvement in learning because they could easily access content for extra revision anywhere, anytime on their own.
A tool for teachers to teach better
Once teachers were familiar with Frog, they began creating interactive learning Sites and shared them with students. Teachers find it convenient to conduct lessons through Frog because all learning and supporting materials can be easily integrated into Sites. Besides that, teachers also encourage students to submit their projects and presentations via Frog for easy access. As all teaching and learning content are made accessible via Frog, teachers in charge of relief classes are able to help students in their assignments even if the assignment is not a subject taught by the teacher.
Frog is making a difference in Administration
The school has been using e-RPH since 2016 and all teachers were required to submit their daily lesson plans via Frog. With all submissions being done online, teachers’ workload have decreased significantly as they were no longer required to fill in their daily log books. Not only that, the school managed to save on printing cost.
Frog is making a difference in Community Engagement
Teachers come together as a community to support and inspire one another and students in 21st Century teaching and learning
SMK St. John has been a Frog Hub since July 2017. The school often hosts various Hub workshops in Tuaran and teachers from other schools within the area will come to learn and share best practices with one another.
