Moonshot Thinking with SK Intan Baiduri

A_moon_shot

The term “moonshot” derives from the Apollo 11 spaceflight project, which landed the first human on the moon in 1969. “Moonshot” may also reference the earlier phrase “shoot for the moon” meaning aim for a lofty target.

Speaking to En. Zaifulsham bin Hj. Ahmad Zakaria, the chairperson of the Parent Teacher Association/ Persatuan Ibu Bapa Guru (PIBG) of SK Intan Baiduri, you get the sense that this man never really intended to plunge into the world of education. Despite that, En Zaiful is working with the PIBG to  change the face of adaptive, situational education in a primary school in Kuala Lumpur, SK Intan Baiduri – with moonshot thinking!

This relatively young school, founded in 2003, is learning to fly. Members of the school community compare SK Intan Baiduri to older schools nearby that have many years of excellence. They wonder how they can make their mark, especially when they are still early in their journey to being an academic powerhouse.

Measuring success

Growth hacking. Weaving connections. This approach, when put into an outlier school seems to produce results. Why is parent engagement through technology curiously higher in SK Intan Baiduri rather than more established schools in the same area?

A little digging, and the school’s head teacher, Tn Hj. Ahmad Fuad bin Ahmad points to En Zaiful.  En Zaiful has had his children move through SK Intan Baiduri, and got involved in the PIBG when he came to the school to appreciate the teachers due to his son’s excellent UPSR results.

A volunteer in many areas including culture and history, as well as a licensed tour guide, En Zaiful shares he didn’t mean to come to the forefront of the parents movement, but gained the trust of fellow parents due to his obvious sense of curiosity.

IMG-20161122-WA0012

Uplifting the community

En Zaiful is a quiet man, but when he speaks, you can see his cogs turning. He is determined to be clear in his concepts and set the record straight. Not surprising, considering he has a background in IT. He thinks like an entrepreneur because he is one.

On a mission to refresh the school’s energy and outlook, and create a new positive culture, En Zaiful and the PIBG focused on how they could uplift and support the students of SK Intan Baiduri, 70% of whom live in the surrounding council housing.

Teachers have recently seen improvements and have been sharing their feedback to the PIBG. Students and teachers are now more cheerful, shares En Zaiful.

How to attract parents

“To attract parents we have to have a carnival where the children must bring one of their parents. Our children always bug us parents to get things done!” shared En Zaiful on why the school’s PIBG came up with the idea of a carnival.

Parents came to the school, played games and interacted with each other as well as with the teachers who facilitated the games. The school also involved other layers of community, inviting students from UPM to help improve the design and landscape of the school for the carnival.

“I do believe that more interest from the parents means more enthusiasm from students. Great schools have good alumni with a strong background, and they help to guide the students, too.”

Bridging the gap

Screen Shot 2016-12-08 at 3.48.30 PM

En. Zaiful shares that the parents’ carnival and an upcoming science fair is interrelated. Students can get really excited in the classroom, especially with the use of technology, but when they go home and try to tell their parents – there is no point – because parents don’t understand. This, he shares, is why the community is so important.

“I realised that students need to have a supportive environment. They spend 5-6 hours at school. What do they do with the rest of their time? We need to bridge the gap between what happens in school and what occurs in the outside world,” says En. Zaiful.

He shares that SK Intan Baiduri is at the awareness stage of 21st century education. With the Frog VLE, he shares, teachers have been getting students more involved with quizzes and games. The school can get further, shares En Zaiful, because of moonshot thinking – where the community dares to think of innovative new solutions to challenges they face.

Specialised spaces

One of the ways in which moonshot thinking is being applied in SK Intan Baiduri, is in the setting up of specialised spaces for Science, Technology, Reasoning/Religion, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics education in the school. These areas are being dreamed up for students to immerse themselves into each of these subjects.

Besides helping to reduce the burden on teachers by enriching the environment and keeping students interested, these space also allow students to repeat their exposure to subjects, increasing familiarity and making learning less intimidating.

IMG-20161023-WA0014

This then allows students to get more familiar and enjoy these subjects. There is also an effort to utilise all equipment and skills available in and around the school – which means a more meaningful movement, that involves community and makes use of what’s at hand.

En. Zaiful uses the term ‘potential outcome’ to explain that students need to have a balance of intellectual, moral and physical learning. This, he shares, is what the PIBG of SK Intan Baiduri is encouraging in their students.

Teacher’s Thoughts on Recent Frog Updates

BP Title Header

Last month, we unveiled a new update to the Frog VLE.

Here is what teachers have shared with us about these exciting changes:

Autosave

Autosave has been one of the most requested features and its availability was met with tremendous approval. Cikgu Adilah gave it a thumbs up, Cikgu Noraslina responded with hearts and Cikgu Marziean deemed it “very useful to teachers” remarking that now teachers who forget to click the 'save changes' button, would not lose all their hard work.

Printing and Transfer

The site printing function was also a hit with Cikgu Noraslina who shared that she loves it. Cikgu Marziean explained how helpful it was for them in keeping with teaching and learning guidelines. She further added that the new site transfer tool, which allows teachers to transfer their sites from previous schools, was “amazing!”.

Site Creation

On the site creation wizard, Cikgu Kon Siew Boi said that it was “excellent in fulfilling our requirements to create a site” whilst Cikgu Saifulnizan remarked how intuitive the site creation wizard was, and how it made sure that they wouldn’t forget a step!

Layouts and Colours

The increased number of site layouts available with the latest update was keenly appreciated by Cikgu Anson Liew who deemed it “excellent”. He also liked the new feedback feature located within the Frog VLE that allows all users to give their feedback directly to us.

Email Notifications

Rounding out the updates were email notifications and a site ownership feature that credits your sites to you, no matter who downloads it. Perhaps, Cikgu Mohd Hanif Bin Zaimar summed it up the best, simply calling the latest updates “fantastic”.

Highlights

We are super excited about the feedback and continue to work on delivering an ever improving product for your best usage. As companions to your work, we delight in supporting you to deliver an improved, equal and modern education for our children.

1BNTA Series | SJKC Choong Wen | ‘Collaboration’

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 11.53.06

On the 16th of May 2016, FrogAsia announced the winners for the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards 2016: Celebrating 21st Century teachers. We appreciate and would like to congratulate these teachers for their awards! For more information, please visit the 1BNTA website.

In this series of articles featuring the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards (1BNTA), we would like to celebrate teachers of the 21st century with stories from their school. Follow us as we uncover the secrets to the success of 21st century schools all throughout our country.

Last week, we had a chat with Pn. Tan Shin Yee, winner of the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards 2016 for the “Collaboration” category. We want to highlight her dedication in encouraging collaboration among her fellow teachers throughout the country. The following are some snippets from our interview with her!

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 11.54.29

Pn. Tan, firstly, congratulations on winning the 1BNTA for Collaboration. You must be so happy! Could you tell us about how you felt when you received the award?

Thank you! At first, I couldn’t believe that I had won, because it would have been the third year in a row for me. But, I’m really touched and so thankful that I’m still being recognised for my efforts and that you have given me the opportunity to showcase my impact and be appreciated for it, although it is simply part and parcel of my role as an educator.

What the word ‘collaboration’ mean to you?

Collaboration means a lot to me. It means teamwork, knowing you aren’t alone, and that you have the support of your friends. It gives me such a warm feeling inside when together, we help and learn from each other.

That’s amazing to hear. We know that you have actively engaged teachers and students across schools with your efforts, including gamification. Would you tell us more about that?

The concept for gamification for training teachers came from a simple thought. If teachers are making lessons fun and exciting for our students, who is creating that environment for us teachers? We can be students too! It’s kind of like, flipping the classroom? We don’t want teachers to feel stressed, but they do need to understand in greater depth what a gamified environment is to be able to use it.

You can tell people all day about how good durian tastes, but the most important element is for you to let them try it. No matter what you tell them, they will not understand. But once they eat it, they will know. That’s my reasoning for using gamification and it has been successful so far.

The teachers I worked with were all really excited! Not only did they want to win the games, they wanted to know how to create such games for their students. They are normally skeptical and a tough audience, but with gamification they were very involved and engaged in offering suggestions and finding solutions.

In fact, it was so successful that an elderly retiring teacher, who had initially complained about attending, actually challenged everyone else to change their ways and switch from paperwork to online exams and quizzes. He told us not to waste so much time and embrace the efficient way forward.

Wow, what a powerful story. And were these training workshops just open to your own school, or did they also welcome others? For example, we know that some schools come together every year to learn new approaches to Frog.

I opened it up to other schools from the start. It’s actually because, since we adopted Frog, I have been receiving invitations from many schools to help in assisting them. My headmaster told me that he had 41 invitation requests from other schools for me! So, he proposed that instead of me going out, that we would support them if they all came in to our school for training. He was looking out for me, because it would be impossible to juggle visiting all of them, and it has worked very well. They come from all over, from Kepong Satu, to Xin Jing to even Penang! I tell them about what I did with Frog, how it transformed the school and how we collaborate with others. It has been very rewarding, especially because, now even the teachers in my school are coming on board.

Were teachers from other schools faster adopters than those in your own school?

Yes, at first outside teachers were more interested than our own school’s teachers. It is an easily explainable phenomenon. Our school’s teachers are not like those in other schools because I had already prepared for them a better environment for them to run their work tasks. They never experienced the struggle of needing to keep finding other ways to work.

However, after three years of witnessing the work, and seeing results in our students, they finally opened their ears and were really willing to listen. The proof is in the workshops. We are now overbooked, and have had to ask for more volunteers to become Frog Advocates. In our LADAP (in-house training) more than 50 of our 80 teachers stayed back to attend a Frog CHENDOL workshop in our school instead of going to a work training session in Penang. It’s amazing. After we completed the PIE workshop, they were eager for CHENDOLl, and after that, they wanted another!

Those changes sound very inspiring. What do you think were other possible reasons for their reluctance? What are common pain points that you know of, and were they addressed?

A major pain point for us teachers was having insufficient time to prepare materials for all the necessary chapters. However, with such a good sharing platform as Frog VLE, we are now able to divide the work between us. From having to prepare materials for all 32 chapters, we now only have to focus on 4 topics. That is nearly a 90% reduction in time used! We can simply build a site together and share it. Furthermore, this collaboration is synergistic. Teachers need not necessarily be evaluated on the quantity of work they put in, but the quality. Each of us can contribute our strengths, or our time, or chip in where needed.

Another pain point we faced is that we receive too much information. We are flooded with it. But, most of the time, we receive information when we do not need it. When we do need it, we can no longer find it. We waste a lot of time trying to find information. Now, we can organize all of it. We can have everything in one place. We don’t have to worry and stress about searching for it everywhere. All we need to do is go onto the teacher community site, and everything is there on one central platform. Isn’t it so much easier?

It is. We are really excited about how you have been using Frog. You use a sandwich technique, would you tell us more about that?

So, I came up with a sandwich technique inspired by gamification. We always tell people what we want to do, but why? You telling people how good something is won’t make them understand so. Why not just demonstrate? Let them see and realise what can be done. Three years ago, when I first approached Frog VLE, all I and anyone knew was that it was just a platform for us to put our lesson plans and build sites for students. Teachers didn’t realise what else it could be used for and viewed it as more work to achieve the same outcome. Why would they change from their old methods? But, I wanted them to feel, to know what the benefits of building a site were. So, I gave them the rundown, step by step, tab by tab. We break it down like our normal lessons and let them understand and feel the difference. For one, the site isn’t only for teaching, but can be used for communication, administrative work and so many other things. How do we present it to others?

Imagine logging onto Frog. The bar on your left is the table of all the ingredients (widgets) you can use to prepare your sandwich. The section on your right is your tray. So, the sandwich you want to make depends on your client. If you want to make it grander, use more ingredients. If you need it to be simpler, just use butter and kaya. As long as you’re happy with your food, you can put anything inside it. You are the chef.

That’s a perfect analogy. One of the ways you engaged students was the ‘Superstar’ competition. What was ‘Superstar’?

‘Superstar’ was a simple competition that had every class selecting who would be their class “superstar” via the Frog VLE. The objective was to let the students vote once and understand how a poll works. It was just one widget, as I didn’t want it to be too complicated, and it was to act as a springboard for them to use more of the Frog VLE. We don’t just use Frog for teaching, but also to have fun. We ran a singing competition and uploaded their videos onto the VLE to announce the winners. So, the students are engaged and happy.

Did you still face any resistance after that?

Actually we did receive complaints about how we were using Frog. When we wanted to host the Superstar competition on Frog, teachers complained and told me that I was using Frog improperly and ‘crazily’. I was very down and sad for awhile, but since then, every year we have recognised for the way we have used Frog.

It is a story I continue to share with other teachers because it shows that there is not just one way to use Frog. We can always do better. For those that are still not ready to experiment, I simply say, “Just try la, the police won’t tangkap you!”. Never worry that it’ll go wrong. If we never try, how do we learn something new? Even if we make mistakes, we learn.

Experience it yourself!
Can you really describe the taste of durian? Try creating a site to really understand it. There's nothing wrong with trying!

Your kitchen? Your rules!
You have control! Creating a Frog VLE site is like making a sandwich with ingredients (widgets) from your table (control panel).

Last week, we had a chat with Pn. Ho Siew Hoon, winner of the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards 2016 for the “Critical Thinking” category. We want to highlight her dedication in encouraging critical thinking and discussion among her students in SMK Seafield, Subang Jaya, Selangor. The following are some snippets from our interview with her!

Pn. Ho, how did your journey with Frog VLE start?
I started using FrogVLE in 2013 and in the beginning stage, my school had a Frog Admin who would encourage us. For me, it started with me being curious about the different widgets available. I learned from FrogAsia’s Youtube Channel and taught myself how to use the different widgets when building my site. It took a lot of effort for me to actually apply it to my site because I wanted to make it useful but still attractive. Even my husband has been teasing me because some nights I stay up to develop my site. It can be a challenge to make time for it but I really enjoy using technology in my teaching.

How did you feel when you found out that you won the 1BNTA award for the “Critical Thinking” category?
I wasn’t expecting to win at all. I was surprised because my submission was totally different from the sample given to me. When FrogAsia called me to tell me that I won, I was invigilating an exam and I had to talk softly. I asked repeatedly whether I was actually the winner. When I shared the news with my husband, he laughed because he thought it was a joke. When I received the official confirmation, he  was proud of me despite not believing me at first. .

What were your students’ and fellow teachers’ reaction?
I shared the news with my students and they were so happy with me, especially as the gift was a sponsored trip to Petrosains for the class. I didn't tell  people  until the official result came in around May. It was then that my headmistress congratulated me officially. I placed the announcement on my site, “Add Maths with Pn. Ho” and some students who have notice congratulated me. I feel very happy and encouraged to continue with the Frog VLE. I just hope that I have more time to make my site more informative and attractive.

Pn. Ho, how has winning this award helped in your role as an teacher?
My students show more enthusiasm and are interested in the materials on my site. They are more willing to collaborate with their classmates when I give them assignments that require discussion and problem-solving. I feel more motivated to continue developing my site. Occasionally, the other teachers who are trying to build their own sites would ask for my help or vice versa. I try to help and we share what we have learnt with each other.

IQ Puzzles Competition during the Curriculum Week.

Screen Shot 2016-08-03 at 14.41.37

#1 | Spend time developing your site!
As teachers, if we don't spend time creating and developing our sites, how can we expect the students to visit the sites? My headmistress has encouraged the teachers in my school to create sites and she will publicise the most viewed monthly. During my school’s Curriculum Week, the Additional Mathematics Panel created an IQ Puzzles competition which received attention from students from different forms to participate.

#2 | Interesting and informative!
Information can be made interesting! We should try making our sites interesting and embed resources from various other educational websites. If I just give the link and resources to my students, they may not watch or even open it. However, when I embed these links and videos onto my site, we will then watch it together in class and students can rewatch it from my site. Before starting a new topic, I embed an example of application of that topic in real life. This has continuously generated interest and excitement from the student.

#3 | Get students involved!
Encourage students to contribute to the content! It makes developing the site easier and they become more interested when they see their suggestions on the site. For example, for Add-Maths, I asked my student to look for appropriate graphs, videos and Thinking Maps (a widget on the FrogVLE that creates mind maps.). I make it a point to add them to my site if it is applicable and the students are excited to see their work on the site.

Perak Frog Advocates Conference 2016

On the 16th of June 2016,  Perak hosted its first Frog Advocates Conference.

More than 80 Frog Advocate Teachers from all over the state of Perak gathered at SMK Tambun in the outskirts of Ipoh for an entire day to get to know each other even better while trading ideas and experiences.

Organized by FrogAsia’s Regional Implementation Consultant for Perak, Mohammad Fitri Mohd Shukri, the conference was held to show appreciation to all of Perak’s Frog Advocate Teachers who have been utilizing the Frog VLE an important tool in teaching and learning.

Fitri Quote

The event was officiated by the Ketua Sektor Pengurusan Akademik (SPA), Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Perak Tuan Haji Mohd Rosli bin Ahmad who started the day with a speech where he expressed admiration and appreciation for all efforts put forth by teachers in the audience. In his opening speech, he reminded the teachers, "The future of the nation is in your hands, thus, the effort is towards students' excellence. Additionally, Malaysia's success is a reflection of your effort and perseverance."

Guy With Mic

One of the day’s highlights were sessions with keynote speaker David Gowling of FrogAsia. In his morning and afternoon sessions, David shared his knowledge on “Supporting Others Through Change” which comes as a result of his many years spent working with top universities in the United Kingdom, guiding lecturers in going through the exact same process.  These sessions were made even more engaging with group activities and idea-sharing among teachers to encourage each other in using the Frog VLE more effectively in their own schools.

David Quote

The day ended with a ceremony to distribute certificates to all advocate teachers who earned the rank of Gold Advocate. Gold Advocates are equipped to carry out their own training sessions with other advocate teachers.

Before leaving, everyone gathered for a photo-taking session in the school hall, and it was amazing to witness how even after a whole day of discussing change and transformation, none of the teachers seemed to be exhausted. This was testament to the ‘Perak Excellent’ culture and its devotion to transformation.

Kami teruskan kerja seperti biasa.

  • External link
  • Random name generator
  • Poll
