FrogAsia caught up with with SJK(C) Choong Cheng, FrogPlay Championship 2017 1st place winner, and found that the power of conviction and determination can lead to great and unexpected outcomes.

 

SJK(C) Choong Cheng was an underdog as a Sekolah Kurang Murid (SKM) throughout the Championship that ran from June to September last year. But through the strong conviction and determination of students, alongside with strong parental support, teachers were encouraged to drive all efforts that led the school to victory.

“As an SKM school, we never thought we would be in the finals, let alone winning the competition! Parents were also very shocked and surprised that we won. It was truly an overwhelming and proud moment for the entire school community,” shared Ms Chew Soo Lee, Frog Admin of the school.

 

Conviction and Determination leading to Victory

It wasn’t all an uphill climb to victory for SJK(C) Choong Cheng as there were moments where teachers were downtrodden.

“When teachers saw that our school was not listed as a Top 30 school, we were so disappointed. We made the announcement to students and parents, feeling so defeated. But despite not being in the Top 30, students and parents did not show signs of giving up and continued pushing the ranks. Parents even came up to teachers and asked us, “What else can we do? How can we help?” I was so surprised!” said Ms Chew as she reminisce on one of the memorable moments from the Championship.

Students kept on doing quizzes on FrogPlay, during and after school hours, with a motivating factor of collecting more Frog credits to create cooler Avatars (a built-in system that allows students to spend currency earned in FrogPlay to buy accessories and items to dress up their virtual Avatars). Parents volunteered to help teachers open the school computer labs for students without computers at home to be able to use FrogPlay. They even created a duty roster to have turns to support the school!

With such conviction and determination, the school pushed its ranking all the way to the top and claimed victory over thousands of other participating schools.

 

Increased Parent Engagement within the School

The FrogPlay Championship became more than just a competition to the SJK(C) Choong Cheng community. Teachers saw how the dynamics between teachers and parents have changed since.

“There has always been a gap between teachers and parents because parents were not engaged to speak to teachers about their children’s activities and progress. But the Championship had bridged that gap when parents began participating in meetings and sharing sessions to plan for the competition. Parents also took initiative to create WhatsApp group chats so that they can directly ask teachers questions about FrogPlay and the Championship,” said Ms Chew.

Not only did the Championship bridge the gap between teachers and parents, it also brought parents closer to their children, especially where education is concerned. Parents became more involved in their children’s school activities and were more invested to contribute to their children’s education.

 

Unlocking Student Potential through FrogPlay Championships

Through the Championship, teachers also saw students showing potential they have never imagined. As part of their grand prize, 30 students were given the chance to attend the Chumbaka programme that gave students the opportunity to innovate and explore the world of technology and programming.

From the Chumbaka experience, students of SJK(C) Choong Cheng made a video on Malaysia’s history and created a story-telling game based on Malaysia’s history and culture with historical Malaysian characters such as Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat. They were also intuitive when it came to group discussions and helping one another as a team.

“It was amazing to see how well my students were performing and how on-par they were with students from city schools, as we are from a rural school,” said Ms Chew.

 

Elevating Student Progress with FrogPlay

FrogPlay continues to be implemented in teaching and learning of the school after the Championship as teachers noticed how 90% of students have become more invested and interested in learning again.

Students started showing improvement in all subjects. Ms Chew noted that Bahasa Malaysia was a tough subject for students in a Chinese school to excel in, but 100% of students had passed the subject in the UPSR examination last year. “FrogPlay is very useful to engage students in subjects that are difficult to master, and Bahasa Malaysia was really a subject students have trouble with because they are mostly Chinese-speaking,” she added.

Ms Chew went on to talk about one of her students who had difficulty in learning and had no initiatives to learn or do anything. However, during the FrogPlay Championship last year, he was always the first in the computer lab and was diligently completing quizzes on FrogPlay. He would even stay back to help teachers tidy up the computer lab. Teachers were amazed at his progress and appointed him as a Frog VLE Prefect.

The interactive quizzes on FrogPlay definitely helped some of my students who have trouble concentrating in class. They are now more responsive in class and more interested in learning,” she commented.
