1.0 Introduction

SK (Felda) Lok Heng Selatan is a rural school located in a Felda area in Kota Tinggi, Johor. The school has a supportive Headmaster, senior leadership team and admin. The school also has a Gold Advocate, Cikgu Huszaruddin, who is always sharing about Frog and helping the school community and other schools in the district to adapt Frog.

This year, the school participated in the FrogPlay World Championships. Frog Admin, Puan Marina, had rallied the school community to come together to plan and prepare for the competition.

2.0 Initiatives

2.1 Teachers visiting homes to help parents

Why it started

  • Teachers often invite parents to come to school so that they can learn about Frog. Parents have that interest but they are not knowledgeable or skilled in matters relating to technology.
  • Parents are very willing to help or assist their children to use Frog, but they are not too sure how to do so because they do not have that knowledge or skill.
  • So the school started a Frog VLE Squad that consist of 5 teachers living within the Felda area to visit parents at their homes to assist them at any time.

Outcome

  • Parents can reach out to the Frog VLE Squad to help them resolve problems with devices, connecting to the internet, login to Frog, etc. As not all parents are able to afford to pay for ICT services, this is another way to help parents with technology for free.

2.2 Collaborating with 1Malaysia Internet Centre

Why it started

  • School is located in Felda area, which is quite rural. Most families are lower income families and may not have devices or internet access at home. Collaborating with the Internet Centre will allow students and parents to access Frog whenever they want to.

Initiation

  • Teachers approached the person-in-charge of the centre and voiced out concerns regarding the matter. The team got together to discuss the matter and have agreed to support and help whenever necessary.
  • The Centre understands the need for parents to know how to use technology and access the internet, as most of them do not have that knowledge or skill. Parents are more than welcome to seek help regarding digital/technology matters.

2.3 Parent engagement

  • The school conducts workshops for parents to familiarise them with Frog, to help them understand how teachers are teaching with Frog and how students are learning with Frog.
  • Workshops are conducted at the 1Malaysia Internet Centre that has enough computers for all parents. Recently, the school is able to borrow some laptops from the PKG and are now conducting workshops in school.

3.0 Success Stories

Putting together plans and strategies is not a one-man show. Everything that has been done so far has been a collective and collaborative effort from the entire school community.
